Anderson School in Bristol provides a new generation of specialist autism education for the local area, as well as welcoming students from other parts such as South Wales and South West England. Our provision is innovative: our students may attend the school full time, or spend some of their time in a community school. Some may take up year round residential placements, others come as part-time boarders or day pupils.
School days are clearly structured, and the curriculum builds on students' skills and talents and addresses the particular challenges they face. This model allows young people with autism to thrive. Students also participate in a wide variety of enrichment activities and our high staff to student ratio allows them to take advantage of the activities that are available in, and our tranquil location on, the outskirts of Bristol.
We have an ethos of family and community engagement in all our schools; research confirms that this leads to better outcomes for pupils. Parents know their child the best and are an invaluable source of knowledge. We also recognize that approaches and strategies used with young people with autism, profound learning difficulties and challenging behaviour, need to be consistent across all settings, especially home and school.
On site the homely, friendly and relaxed atmosphere and appropriate autism-specific environment enables pupils to learn. Living and learning areas are separate, fixtures and furnishings autism-friendly and assistive technology installed throughout.
At the school, we treat every child as an individual. We listen to and respect their values and views. And we put their needs and well-being before anything else. The curriculum is geared to the needs of individual pupils and our facilities which include: multi-sensory room, music and recording facilities, outdoor horticultural and forest school areas and teaching kitchens enable us to cater for a wide range of abilities.
